Copy of a letter from the Hon'ble Mr. J. Donald, M.A., C.I.E., I.C.S., Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Commerce Department, to the Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Commerce and Industry, No. 1641-Com, dated Calcutta, the 11th April 1919.

I am directed to refer to 'r. Corbett's letter No.1282–D, dated the 10th "ebruary 1919, in which the Government of India inquired concerning the available assets of the Calcutta Branch of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank, and to state that on the 28 th February 1919, there stood in the Bank of Bengal to the credit of Government a sum of Rs.6,58,358-11-1 in favour of the Calcutta Branch of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank. There are, however six suits pending in the High Court representing over 2 lacs of rupees due to the Bank. Since the amistice was signed several drafts issued by the Calcutta Branch previous to the outbreak of war have been presented to the Liquidator of Tostile Fims, Bengal, for payment, and it is expected that other such drafts are likely to be presented. It is not therefore possible at present to state precisely the mount of available assets of the Calcutta Branch of

the Deutsch Asiatische Bank.
